25. Freemason’s Hall

Charles Barrie & Augustus W. Pugin's grand lodge

Covent Garden, London

The Freemason’s Hall has been the centre of English Freemasonry for 230 years and is the oldest Grand Lodge in the world. Designed by Architects H. V. Ashley and F. Winton Newman it is a grade II* listed building and dates from 1927-1933.
Located in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, the monumental art deco style and elaborate exterior feature masonic symbolism in decorative stonework and stained glass windows. In recent times, the Grand Lodge has formed the backdrop for many film and television settings and serves as an attractive tourist destination.

An inwardly looking building, the Grand Lodge equals the flamboyance of the external stonework with decorative painted coved ceiling, and bronze doors each weighing one and a quarter tonne.
