50. Streatham and Clapham High School
Cottrell & Vermeulen Architects' school in south London
Streatham, London
The dining room space was intentionally designed with CLT in mind – the geometry works around existing tree protection areas and offers tall open spaces that taper down to lower intimate areas making the dining room feel light, airy with also a domestic scale in parts. The CLT and glulam structure is exposed and other natural materials are used to make the space feel warm and ‘grown up’.
The first phase of the project was the new sixth form block built on top of the existing school building. Also constructed in CLT, the sixth form offers varied spaces for learning and social time. Spaces are open leaving them flexible and adaptable for the users. The extension consists of classrooms, seminar rooms, science labs, study room and the sixth form common room.

“Having worked as architect for Streatham and Clapham School I know the building inside out, but I am always taken by the generosity of the spaces, in particular the dining hall - it feels like a place for celebration and is an important space for the school to come together day in and day out - and it was an honour to celebrate the 50th Salads tour here!"
